Caulfeild

West Vancouver has a rich history- and a lot of it took place in the neighbourhood of Caulfeild! Francis Caulfeild, an English scholar and artist, arrived with his daughter in Vancouver in 1898 on a leisurely tour of Canada, and ended up in what is now Caulfeild Cove. After spending the day in the area, Caulfeild had already fallen in love with the enchanting, rugged, natural beauty. He was inspired to create a traditional, English-style village where houses would be built into the landscape and where people could enjoy the nature as a community. Caulfeild respected the landscape as it was and wanted to form building lots without the typical, pioneer-style clearing of the land which was common (and still carries on to this day), that strips the land of trees, shrubs and boulders, before building onto a void, lifeless piece of earth. Instead, he thought every effort should be made to keep large trees wherever possible, and leave large boulders and rocks as they were, recognising the uniqueness of each lot and working with that.

Caulfeild is one of West Vancouver’s favourite neighbourhoods due to its serene location, gorgeous homes, and having so much to offer its residents in a small space. Caulfeild Village Shopping Centre is a practical group of stores and services that make it the ideal “one-stop shopping” destination. This is the only one of its kind in the western end of West Vancouver and the only grocery store in West of Dundarave (or 25th street to be exact). So having it right in your own neighborhood is a big perk. Caulfeild Park is one of the best-kept secrets in the neighborhood. It’s stunningly beautiful, but not so well known. It’s also not the most accessible. The park is a bit out of the way, there is no main entrance, and parking is very limited Caulfeild Park is unique in a number of ways. It’s in a wealthy residential neighbourhood. There are homes right on the waterfront near the park. For ones in the immediate area, however, between the mansions and the ocean, is the

Transit and Walkability

Transportation in the area is good, considering the somewhat confusing layout of the neighborhood. Walking through the neighborhood is not the easiest though. The roads wind and go up and down with the inclining geography- not to mention a lack of sidewalks. You are less than 10 minutes to Park Royal, about 15-20 to get Downtown, and 50 minutes to the airport.

Schools

Caulfeild Elementary and Rockridge Secondary are both highly regarded schools in West Vancouver known for their strong academic programs, dedicated teachers, and supportive learning environments.

Cons

Caulfield has drawbacks like a high cost of living, few public transportation options, congested and busy streets during rush hours, a lack of affordable housing options, limited nightlife, poor air quality due to its proximity to major highways, a lack of job opportunities in some industries, limited access to public amenities, and a lack of cultural diversity in the community.
